【Of(Studies及王佐良先生译文(英汉对照)x)】Of Studies
by Francis Bacon
Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chief use for delight is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business.
To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them only for ornament is affectation; and to make judgment wholly by them is the humour of a scholar.
Read not to contradict, nor to believe, but to weigh and consider.
Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.
That is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.
Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.
And therefore, if a man write well, he may be said to have his wit at command.
He that is niggardly in his reading, is as one that is niggardly in his diet: he eats little, and yet is not nourished.
He that is curious in his reading, doth as a man that eateth all sorts of meats, but neither digesteth them, nor taketh any strength from them.
The study of the world is the best kind of philosophy.
But he that would be a perfect orator must study the art of speaking, and he that would be a perfect statesman must study the art of government.
So, let us learn to read, to speak, and to write, that we may be fit for the world.
